Learning in Year One

Exciting learning continues in Year One. On this page you will find what the end of year expectations are, information about the Phonics Test that all children undertake in June and the overview of what children will learn each term.

Phonics Tests

During the year children will continue learning how to decode and read using their phonics skills. In June all children will undertake an assessment of their phonic knowledge. The tests are set by the National Curriculum Assessment department and consist of forty real words and forty nonsense words. Families will be told if their child has or has not met the expected standard.

End of Year Expectations for Year 1

This information is for parents and carers about the end of year expectations for children in our school. The staff have identified these expectations as being the minimum requirements your child must meet in order to ensure continued progress throughout the following year.

All the objectives will be worked on throughout the year and will be the focus of direct teaching. Any extra support you can provide in helping your children to achieve these is greatly valued.

If you have any queries regarding the content of this booklet or would like support in knowing how best to help your children please talk to your child’s teacher.
